Singapore, 1961, not Paris
Tan Shou Chen's staging moves Violetta out of Second Empire Paris and into pre-independence Singapore. The company frames the plot against the 1961 Women's Charter: whose life counts as respectable, whose sacrifice gets remembered, what happens to a woman who lives outside the line. Violetta Valery has built a life on the edge of that line. Alfredo Germont offers a different future. Family duty and public morality close in. You already know how the opera ends. The point of this run is the setting, not a surprise last act.
Lien Boon Hua is music director. Wayfarer Sinfonietta is in the pit. TK Hay designed the set, Johanna Pan the costumes, Adrian Tan the lights, Yvan Karlsson the movement. That is the Wild Rice and Opera People billing, matched on SISTIC.
Who sings which night
Two Violettas and two Alfredos split the four performances. Check the date before you book a favourite voice.
- 29 and 31 October 2026. Renata Hann Sungwon as Violetta. Jonathan Charles Tay as Alfredo.
- 30 October and 1 November 2026. Anna Migallos as Violetta. David Charles Tay as Alfredo.
- All four nights. Cao Yixiao as Giorgio Germont.
Around them: Cherie Tse as Flora, Daniela Leska as Annina, Jonathan Macpherson as Gastone, Edward Kim as Barone Duphol, Dennis Lau as Marchese d'Obigny, Shawn Liew as Dottore Grenvil, Ted Ngoo as Giuseppe, Yong Kwan as the servant and commissioner. Ensemble: Akiko Otao, Lin Renyue, Alison Wong, Azura Farid. David Charles Tay and Jonathan Charles Tay co-founded The Opera People in 2018 with Shridar Mani. You are watching the company's own tenors trade the same role on consecutive nights.
Runtime, fees, how to sit
Wild Rice prints the evening at about 2 hours 30 minutes, including two 15-minute intermissions. SISTIC prints 150 minutes including those two breaks, which is the same span. The Opera People's own site prints 2 hours 40 minutes including two intervals. Trust the 2 hours 30 minutes figure for planning dinner. Add SISTIC's booking fee on top of the face value: S$6 from S$70.01, S$5 from S$50.01, S$4 between S$40.01 and S$50, S$3 between S$20.01 and S$40, S$1 under S$20. Restricted view at S$20 still pays a fee. The 358-seat thrust stage is close. Restricted view is the cheap way in, not a cinema-style side slice. If you want the surtitles and the faces, pay for a standard tier.
The theatre sits at 107 North Bridge Road, #04-08, Funan, Singapore 179105. City Hall MRT, NS25 and EW13, walks underground into Basement 2. Mall hours 10am to 10pm. A 7.30pm show means you eat first. The Sunday 3pm matinee on 1 November 2026 is the last house of the limited season. There is no Monday extension on the listing.
The Opera People is a registered charity. Donations are matched dollar for dollar by the Cultural Matching Fund. That is separate from the ticket. The ticket is SISTIC. If a tout forwards a screenshot, ignore it. The official path is the SISTIC event code verdi1126, the Wild Rice page, or theoperapeople.com.
